Sinharaja Forest

Sinharaja forest is the only rain forest left in Sri Lanka. The length of the forest from east to west is 21 Kilometres. The forest covers an extent 9000 of hectares. The forest is situated in the southern part of the island. The Sinharaja forest has many rivers. There are beautiful waterfalls in it. The forest is the home for birds and other animal. Most trees are endemic to Sri Lanka. The forest is protected by the government. People can not cut trees or kill animals in this forest. This forest is a national treasure. Villagers enter the forest to tap Kitul palms. Medicinal plants are also collected by villages. Some villagers collect firewood from the forest.

The Sinharaja woodland, which is permeated by thick fog, is perilous, mysterious, and shrouded in darkness. The reserve is well-integrated with the local population who live in some dozens of villages dotted along the border. The crystal-clear water coming from dozens of streams is the main water source for all people living around the reserve. For generations, local people trekked through the forest from south to north to make their annual pilgrimage to the Sri Padaya.
